Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the most successful albums by anyone! It is considered as most influential album in the 20th Century. It was #1 hit when it was released in 1967; especially, in the U.S. the album stayed top over 175 weeks.

It is also considered as a 1st concept album ever made and of course, it’s made by The Beatles. Not to mention, it was very experimental and innovative by using multi-track recording to produce different layers of sound into one, and they used tape-based keyboard sampler for magnetic tape… This is back in ’67, but you have to give The Beatles credit for creating the sound of future. The unique sound of this album tells you this is the psychedelic album. For those who do not know about psychedelic means, it means to manifest your mind. “Within You Without You” is made by George Harrison. Predominately writers in The Beatles are John Lennon and Paul McCarthy, but George Harrison usually makes 1 or 2 tracks in The Beatles album. In this album, It would be “Within You Without You,” inspired by Indian music and you could notice the many Indian instruments are used in this song. The sitar guitar is played by George Harrison with Indian musicians. The sound of music is very calm that you could probably even meditate through this song, and using numerous tradition Indian instruments like drums and strings produce very mystical tunes. It creates very spiritual sound which makes George Harrison almost sound like as if he is a Guru. (Guru means a mentor who practices meditations). Not to mention, the lyrics deal with idea of Hindu and reincarnation. It fits perfect with the concept of this album, psychedelics.

"Bodysnacher" from Radiohead's new album In Rainbows

My personal favorite band Radiohead came out with their new 7th album. With interesting way of promote their new album In Rainbows. You can set your own price for their music from online (http://www.inrainbows.com/). I got it for free since I’m planning to buy the album itself in near future. I consider Radiohead as one of the most innovative bands in the world. Electronica is the genre for this album. 2nd track “Bodysnatchers” starts with great riff guitar sounds will definitely catch your ears. Then rapid repeative drum beats speed up the song while contributing the dynamic of the sounds. Thom, vocal of this band sings the song slowly then he sings faster and sometimes it almost sounds as if chant. During the bridge of the song, rhythm guitar makes the background of the song as if you are hearing mysterious waves playing in your ears when this transition is going with Thom Yorke’s falsetto singing turns into fast rage tone as if he is trying to warm us. By the end of the song you will feel like as if you just finished roller coaster ride. The funny thing about this track is that the more you listen to it the more you will notice the many different sounds layered together at the same time. Also interesting fact about this album is that some of the songs are binaural recorded; I didn’t know what was that term until I did little search on wikipedia.org and I found out that using different sounds on each other to create whole another sound. So I advise you to listen to this song with headphones to truly experience the band’s great effort.
